Getting Started
Air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) come in several styles that can be suitable for larger buildings, including variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems, mini-splits, and multi-splits. VRF systems are highly customized for each application, requiring more specialized design expertise than the design for a system based on mini- or multi-split units.
- If you are considering installing a VRF system and haven’t yet identified a firm to design and install it, MassCEC recommends working with a manufacturer's representative, particularly for “design-build” projects. These individuals have specific expertise designing systems based on an individual manufacturer’s products. Regional manufacturer's representatives are listed in the table below.
- Another option is to work with an architect or engineering firm with VRF experience to design your system, such as those included in the downloadable file available at the bottom of this page. Some engineering firms will also install the system. Other firms specialize in installation only.
- If you plan to install mini- or multi-split style heat pumps, please see the link at the bottom of this page for a partial listing of companies who do that work.

Questions for Design or Installation Contractors
Before hiring a design or installation contractor, consider discussing your project with more than one company. The questions below will help you select a firm with the qualifications and practices needed for a successful project.
Experience
-
Have you participated in manufacturer training for the systems you would design or install? (MassCEC recommends 8 hours of manufacturer training for a VRF designer and 16 hours of manufacturer training for an installer)
-
Can you provide references from previous customers with similar projects?
Installation Process
-
When would you be able to perform the installation and how long will it take to complete?
-
Will you hire subcontractors to complete portions of the project? If so, what firms and what will they do?
-
Will you provide some training for our building's staff on how to properly operate and maintain the system?
-
What kind of warranty do you provide for the systems you install?
List of Past Participating Designers and Installers
Updated 6/14/2019
The following list of ASHP contractors signed up to design or install VRF and/or other ASHP systems (e.g., mini- or multi-splits) through MassCEC’s commercial-scale ASHP program, which ended in June 2019. Please note that this list has not been updated since the MassCEC program closed. Additional companies may also offer these services.
